Cumberland Elementary Takes Steps Toward Better Health |
Cumberland Elementary is taking steps to improve student health. In an all-school assembly on Friday, Principal Jim Richie announced two new programs that will be implemented: recess before lunch and a new school walking program. Beginning Tuesday, January 23rd, Cumberland Elementary students will go to recess before lunch. Other schools that have implemented this change have seen multiple benefits:
When recess comes after lunch -- a typical format in many elementary schools -- students are likely to rush through their meal, leaving much of it uneaten, to hurry out to the playground. Placing recess before lunch allows students to burn off pent-up energy, and then sit down to eat and return to the classroom ready to learn. The second new program will begin on Valentine’s Day. Elementary students will have the option to participate in a school walking program during all recess periods. One quarter mile loops are being plotted on the playground. After each lap, student walkers will get their mileage card stamped by the recess supervisor. For every full mile they walk, they will receive a "toe token” that they can string onto their shoe laces or a short chain. Other incentives and prizes are also planned. The walking program is receiving funding and support from the Healthier Cumberland Coalition. Studies indicate that programs to increase physical activity and improve nutrition at schools lead to increased attendance, decreases in nurse visits and discipline referrals, and improved achievement test performance by students. Congratulations, Cumberland Elementary, for taking steps to better health! |
