HCC Supports Local Projects to Promote Healthy Eating |
|
As part of the 2008 It Pays to Eat Fruits and Vegetables community challenge, Healthier Cumberland is pleased to support two projects that promote healthy eating by increasing fruit and vegetable consumption. The first project was developed by Cumberland High School health educator Nancy Scharhag. The goal is to promote healthy eating through experiential learning for adolescents. Currently, over 60 high school students are enrolled in one of three health classes. The class curriculum involves learning about the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables teens should be eating. As part of this project, the students have the opportunity to sample different fruit and vegetable items, exposing them to new ways to eat healthier despite a busy schedule. They also discuss how these foods can be incorporated into breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. One innovative activity has been a taste test of the different V8 varieties. The students also designed and tasted their own vegetable pizzas. Creative examples include the ½ carrot, broccoli, black olive, pickle, pineapple and green pepper and ½ carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, and mushroom pizza, as well as the ½ carrots, broccoli, and pickles and ½ sauerkraut and mushroom pizza. The second project was designed by Chris Hopkins-Hile. The goal is to promote healthy eating by changing the environment at community theatre rehearsals. Cumberland Enrichment Through Culture (ETC) will be presenting Anne of Green Gables December 4-7 and 11-13, 2008. The production is co-directed by Chris and Diane Thorp and involves a cast of adults and a large number of students. Chris states, "It is common for cast members of shows to bring unhealthy snacks to rehearsal, in fact many people eat less healthy foods during the time they are rehearsing a play, because so many evenings they are not home and do not have time to fix healthy meals." With this project, healthy fruit and vegetable snacks will be provided at Anne of Green Gables rehearsals. The snacks will be prepared by volunteer cast parents. Recipes will also be available. The It Pays to Eat Fruits and Vegetables community challenge will end this week. Healthier Cumberland reminds all participants to submit their challenge log books at either the Cumberland Library or the Cumberland Memorial Hospital front desk by November 3rd to be eligible for the cash prize drawing.
